How does Apple Pay work?

Apple Pay is a digital wallet built into every iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. Customers pay using the card already stored in their Apple Wallet, authenticated via Face ID or Touch ID, without entering card details at checkout. Because HiPay supports Apple Pay across all major browsers and not just Safari, your customers can complete the payment regardless of how they arrived at your checkout.

STEP 01

Customer adds to cart

The shopper selects their items and proceeds to checkout on your store, on any browser or device.

STEP 02

Apple Pay button appears at checkout

The Apple Pay button is displayed automatically to eligible customers. No manual selection is required for returning users.

STEP 03

Customer authenticates with Face ID or Touch ID

A native Apple Pay prompt appears. The customer authenticates using Face ID, Touch ID, or their device passcode. No card number is entered.

STEP 04

Payment processed instantly

The tokenised payment is processed in real time. No card data is ever shared with the merchant.

STEP 05

Order confirmed

Your system receives the webhook confirmation and the order is processed immediately. The customer sees confirmation on screen and in their Apple Wallet.

Why HiPay is the right partner for Apple Pay

What sets HiPay apart for merchants adding Apple Pay to their checkout.

01

Multi-browser Apple Pay, out of the box

Most PSPs only support Apple Pay on Safari. HiPay has just launched support for Apple Pay across all major browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Your customers can pay with Apple Pay wherever they are, on whatever browser they use, with no extra development work on your side.

02

One integration, all your markets

Apple Pay activates through your existing HiPay integration. Full-service is available across 30 European markets with daily settlement in EUR. Gateway support extends to 100 plus countries. Your technical team works with the same API already in production.

03

Native strong authentication, no 3DS2 overhead

Apple Pay uses Face ID and Touch ID as native strong authentication. Every transaction satisfies PSD2 SCA requirements automatically, with no additional 3DS2 step required on the merchant side. Your conversion does not suffer from authentication friction.

Full and partial refunds

Apple Pay supports both full and partial refunds through HiPay's standard refund flow. No separate process is required for your operations team.

Payment guaranteed

Once authorised, Apple Pay transactions are guaranteed. HiPay handles disputes in line with card scheme rules, with no additional complexity for your team.

Native biometric authentication

Face ID and Touch ID replace manual card entry at checkout. Conversion rates stay high because authentication is instant and familiar to every Apple user.

Multi-browser support

Unlike most PSPs, HiPay supports Apple Pay across all major browsers: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. No customer is left without the option to pay with Apple Pay.

Localised fraud management

Risk rules are configured automatically through HiPay. Tokenised Apple Pay transactions carry reduced fraud exposure compared to standard card payments, with no card data shared at the point of sale.

CMS-ready integration

Apple Pay is available out of the box for Magento 2, PrestaShop, Shopware, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, and WooCommerce. Your technical team can activate it without custom development.

Common questions

What is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is Apple's digital wallet and payment service, built into iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. Customers pay using a card stored in their Apple Wallet, authenticated via Face ID or Touch ID. No card number is entered at checkout and no card data is shared with the merchant. It works both in-store via NFC and online via supported browsers.

Which browsers support Apple Pay through HiPay?

HiPay supports Apple Pay across all major browsers, including Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Most PSPs limit Apple Pay to Safari only. HiPay's multi-browser implementation means your customers can complete an Apple Pay payment regardless of which browser they use, with no extra development required on your side.

In which countries is Apple Pay available through HiPay?

HiPay offers Apple Pay on a full-service basis across 30 European markets, including France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and more. Gateway support extends to over 100 countries worldwide. Contact our team to confirm availability for your specific market.

What currencies are supported?

Full-service Apple Pay through HiPay supports EUR settlement. Gateway integration supports all major global currencies, allowing international merchants to accept Apple Pay in local currencies and settle in EUR.

Does Apple Pay support recurring payments?

No. Apple Pay does not currently support recurring or subscription billing through HiPay. Each transaction requires the customer to authenticate individually. If your business model requires recurring payments, HiPay can advise on complementary options.

What is the chargeback and dispute policy?

Apple Pay transactions are subject to card scheme chargeback rules, as the underlying payment instrument is the customer's card. Dispute timeframes follow the card issuer's regulations. HiPay's fraud management configuration helps reduce chargeback exposure, and our risk team can advise on thresholds for your market.
